First autocar, and then confirmed by car and driver
Autocar interviewed the program manager for the Mazda 3, who said that he wants a “ hyper” version of the hatchback:
“I’m a car guy, so I myself want to drive a high performance Mazda 3… I’ll do my best,” he said. Although he claimed the project had not been officially signed off, insiders suggest that is a formality. Beppu said there was keen interest from “most developed countries”, including the US, Japan and Australia.
While various drivetrain configurations have been discussed, it is the turbocharged 2.5-litre engine from larger US-spec Mazdas that is the most likely powerplant. “Generally speaking we would use the motor to get more performance,” Beppu said in shunning a hot hybrid version.

At 40k though would it be worth it?sounds like it’d be more of a golf R alternative with a softer suspension.

Having been in one of Mazda’s “cushier” recent vehicles, I’m going to say that it will be on the stiffer end of the suspension spectrum. Like, Fiesta ST with the coils removed stiffer.
Think of it as a $40k Veloster N or Type-R competitor. Unless it’s AWD, then a FoRS competitor.

$40k is the starting point for used Lotus Evoras. Why would you get a Mazda when you can get a Lotus?

Do people keep forgetting the 2.5t is basically a suv motor originally designed for the CX9? High torque, low revs. I hope Mazda changes that to make it more fun but I have my doubts.

I found the last gen 3 to be soft/quiet and this gen is by all accounts softer and quieter.
I just don’t see Mazda throwing the kitchen sink at a MS3, it’d be more of a top trim with an engine upgrade sort of thing rather than a comprehensively tuned hot hatch.

The original 2.3L in the Mazdaspeed3/6 was used as an SUV motor in the CX-7.

I don’t know what you’re talking about. British engineering is a byword for quality. Lotus cars are totally not assembled by two drunkards in a shed.

Nope. They're assembled by half a dozen blokes who like to knock a couple warm ones back at lunch, before heading back to the industrial condo :)

I think it’s be good, but C&D is painting it as a 30k raucous golf R, which, no. Does Mazda even have a manual transaxle for the 2.5t yet?

I want this to be real, and for it to actually come to market, but I’m not holding my breath.
